The Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) conducts multidisciplinary and translational research in many fields, ranging from molecular biology to clinical research and public health. Its research portfolio covers both infectious and non-communicable diseases, as well as their environmental drivers. ISGlobal has greatly contributed to the translation of health research into public health policies in many of these areas, and is one of the leading think tanks in the global health category, according to the “Global Go to Think Tank” index. It also has solid experience in science communication.

ISGlobal leads the WP7 (communication, dissemination and exploitation) of the e-QuoL project.

Isabelle Thierry-Chef

Isabelle Thierry-Chef

As Head of the Medical Radiation Group, Isabelle spearheads radiation activities within the Environment and Health over the Life course programme of ISGlobal. With a primary background in environmental sciences and radiation protection, she earned her PhD in 2000 for the reconstruction of organ doses she performed for the 15-Country Study on Cancer Risk among Radiation Workers in the Nuclear Industry.

In the last 20 years, Dr Thierry-Chef has dedicated herself to studying the potential health impacts (mainly cancer but also non-cancer effects and social impact) of exposure to ionising radiation, with particular attention payed to children. Within the EPI-CT project (European Paediatric CT scan study), she led the dose reconstruction workpackage (WP) and she subsequently led the WP devoted to the assessment of pediatric scanning’s health impacts in the MEDIRAD EU project. In 2018, she initiated the HARMONIC project, which she is coordinating since then, aiming to understand the health impact of cardiac fluoroscopy and modern radiotherapy in paediatrics. On the basis of the collaboration with clinicians, initiated in the framework of HARMONIC, she is WP7 leader in the e-QuoL project.

A resident of Barcelona for the past 17 years, Anne-Sophie has worked on several international multi-centric research projects related to Education and Health.

She is currently working at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health as Public and Patient Involvement in Health Research Manager, promoting the active participation of patients, caregivers and citizens into all the phases of research projects. In this context, she has coordinated together with Dra. María Jesús Pinazo, the InSPIRES project (embedded under the Responsible Research and Innovation initiative of the Innovation department, and developed in collaboration with International Health clinical department of Hospital Clinic) whose main purpose was to bring science and society closer together in order to co-create research agendas that directly respond to citizen’s needs and concerns, providing evidence and giving support to political bodies and decision-makers for the creation of better public policies. She was also actively involved in the CRISH, InnovDoctor, CALMA, and CoUp Lab projects, developed and implemented in collaboration between ISGlobal and the Hospital Clinic Barcelona.
She is also a member of the Patient Experience Observatory of the Hospital Clinic Barcelona, a platform that promotes the evaluation and incorporation of Patient Experience into the strategy and daily clinical practice. Acting transversally within the Hospital, the Observatory promotes active participation and co creation together with patients and caregivers in order to redesign healthcare according to their unmet needs. The Observatory also promotes the dissemination and application of good practices obtained in the Hospital, to innovate and improve the provision of health services, in an open and collaborative manner.

Together with the Barcelona University – Faculty of Medicine and Life SCiences, the Hospital Clinic LivingLab and the ISGlobal Science and Society Unit, the UNESCO K4C Catalan Hub was established in 2024 within the international UNESCO consortium. Through our role in UNESCO, we facilitate regional collaboration and innovation, leveraging our position to foster meaningful partnerships and advancements in our community.
